Epsom & Ewell lose at Chertsey

Epsom & Ewell were defeated 2-0 away at Chertsey. The hosts took the lead on 21 minutes when a free-kick was floated over the Epsom wall finding the inside of Neil Harrowing's net. Chertsey should have been further ahead but their wayward shooting kept the score line at just a single goal difference. Epsom & Ewell's Phillip N'gbale was shown a red for the second match running on 86 minutes after getting substituted and trying to get to the dressing rooms through the gate by the Chertsey bench, saw him aggrevated and try to lash out at the home bench. Chertsey scored a second on 88 minutes, the ball crossed into the middle for a Chertsey striker get a shot in from 8 yards out that Neil Harrowing locked with his legs but he was unable to keep the follow-up out.

Reserves comeback to gain win at Camberley

Epsom & Ewell's Reserves came back from Krooner Park with a 2-1 win against Camberley Town. Camberley took an eighth minute lead when a free-kick beat Tim Farrington at the base of his back post. Adam Pero's cross a minute later saw Jamie Watson's header hit the post. A Julian Van Gelder cross on 11 minutes found Adam Pero with a diving header at the back post that went wide. Adam Pero's cross from the wing on 18 minutes saw Jamie Watson connect with a volley 30 yards out that only just cleared the crossbar. Julian Phillips long range shot on 29 minutes fell wide of the Camberley goal and another Julian Van Gelder free-kick on 38 minutes found Adam Pero with a header straight into the gloves of Kris Hatton. Epsom & Ewell found the equaliser on 48 minutes when Epsom broke away upfield finding Adam Pero to take an excellent goal. Adam Pero's free-kick on 53 minutes saw Kris Hatton unable to hold on to the ball, the ball falling to Jamie Watson to put the loose ball into the net.

Epsom & Ewell youth progress in FA Youth Cup

Epsom & Ewell Youth managed to deservedly progress to the next round of the FA Youth Cup with a 2-0 win against Dover Athletic after extra-time. The match was very open in the first half with Epsom & Ewell posing the visitors with some early problems but Dover had the first real effort on 23 minutes, the Epsom defence being exposed by a through ball that found Scott Bouvier, his angled shot shaving the post. Ruben Lavrado was played in by Alex Bailey on 28 minutes, his shot forcing the Dover keeper Nick Shaw into a save to his right. Epsom kept creating chances but the five man Dover defence thwarted any chance of a shot on target with last ditch tackles. Epsom should of been ahead on 48 minutes, the ball being floated over the top of the Dover defence finding Yousef Conteh to chip the ball over the advancing Nick Shaw but the ball fell the wrong side of the post by inches. Epsom kept creating the chances but a gutsy performance by the visiting defence managed to keep the ball out of the net much to the frustration of the home players and vocal supporters. Epsom were denied two loud penalty appeals for handball against Dover players inside the final ten minutes of the second half but normal time ended in a goal less stalemate - the second one to involve Epsom sides in FA Competitions inside 96 hours at Merland Rise.

Dover should have been ahead on 93 minutes when Scott Bouvier managed to get away from the Epsom defence after picking up a ball down the right wing, cutting in with only Alex Sale to beat he managed to find the side netting from 12 yards out. Epsom took control of the match from this point until the final whistle and a controversial moment occurred on 104 minutes when Sam Braggins corner floated over the keeper off the inside of the far post and over the line but the goal celebrations were short lived as the goal was ruled out for an alleged push by Ruben Lavrado on the keeper. Epsom managed to take the lead on 108 minutes when Ruben Lavrado picked up a Mark Frimpong pass just inside the area, managing to twist twice in the box he set himself up well to guide the ball diagonally into the corner of the net from 8 yards out past Nick Shaw to send the Epsom players into jubilant celebrations and the majority of the Epsom crowd into raptures. The goal allowed the Dover defence to become more exposed as Epsom found ease in getting the ball down both wings as the second period of extra time progressed, and the referee was given no option but to award a penalty in the 117th minute when Yousef Conteh had both legs taken inside the Dover box. Captain Dan Cunningham stepped up to slot the penalty home past Nick Shaw who had saved a penalty in the last round. In the next round we will be away at Oakwood in a fortnight.

Epsom & Ewell get knocked out with last gasp goal

Epsom & Ewell were knocked out of the FA Vase by a 119th minute winner scored by Sevenoaks Town, but for the second week running it was Epsom that were the better side but failed to take their chances. Epsom & Ewell started the match the better side and had the better chances, the closest chances in the first half all falling to Epsom & Ewell, Tim Hurren connecting with headers on the back post after 23 and 37 minutes that flashed wide of the post, Dale Marvell managed to drive an attack into the box but from 8 yards out he managed to scuff his shot straight into the goalkeeping gloves of Lee Friend and it was Dale Marvell again with volley from the edge of the box on 41 minutes which forced Sevenoaks keeper Lee Friend into making an instinctive save to parry the ball over his own bar. Epsom continued making the chances in the second half, Phillip N'gbale after 52 minutes managed to get away from his marker but managed to lose possession as he was about to shoot. Phillip N'gbale managed to leap above Sevenoaks' Ryan Hawkins on 62 minutes to glance a Ricky Rockfeller cross towards goal forcing Friend to reach above himself to make a save just under his own bar. Dale Marvell's corner on 77 minutes found Phillip N'gbale with a powerful downward header that forced Friend to make a double handed diving save to his left to keep the ball out. Richard Ingham was forced to clear off the line on 83 minutes and Neil Harrowing had to deal with a shot that took a nasty bounce off a divot after 85 minutes seeing Sevenoaks' James Dalton managing to screw the ball wide from 8 yards out after the ball had come off Harrowing's chest.

The first half of extra time saw Epsom & Ewell presented with an opportunity after 98 minutes when Ricky Rockfeller's shot took a ricochet off a Sevenoaks player into the path of Joseph Maye to run at the Sevenoaks goal with only Lee Friend to beat but Maye's legs run out of steam and his effort from the edge of the box to chip the ball over the visiting keeper fell straight into Friend's gloves. Charlie Pritchard on 103 minutes make a run into the Sevenoaks box, the Epsom player's shot from 10 yards out giving Sevenoaks keeper a comfortable save. Both sides in the second half of extra-time seemed resigned to a replay on Wednesday night until the 119th minute, Dale Marvell tried to take on one too many players on his own, the Sevenoaks player taking the ball away from the Epsom midfielder and playing it down the right wing seeing Richard Ingham pick up the ball and try to run it out of defence from just inside his own box only for the ball to be nicked away which was then crossed into Tony Atkins to angle the ball into the far corner of the net from 10 yards out past Neil Harrowing. There was still enough time to see Phillip N'gbale pick up two yellow cards inside ninety seconds in injury time when he was booked for a deemed late challenge despite winning the ball and then for unsporting behaviour, Tim Hurren was also shown a yellow card for a late challenge and the Sevenoaks captain Paul Springett was shown a yellow card for pole axing Tim Hurren which then led up to N'gbale's second yellow card.

Walton Casuals battle back for draw against Reserves

Epsom & Ewell's reserves managed to come away from Walton Casuals with a draw but will be kicking themselves for failing to gain all three points against an aggreived home side that had six players booked and a sending-off. Jamie Watson managed to open the scoring for Epsom & Ewell mid way through the first half - Walton Casuals had deemed that the ball had gone over the by-line before being crossed for Watson to score, the dispute seeing Walton Casuals reduced to ten men. Walton Casuals scored a late equaliser when the Epsom defence were caught in possession on the edge of our own area allowing the ball to be slotted past Stuart Millard.

Youth win top of table battle

Epsom & Ewell Youth side managed to win tonight's top of the table Southern Youth League East Division tussle at Merland Rise against second placed Cobham. A week on from Dave Wilson being taken ill before passing away on Thursday, a minute's silence was observed. It was Cobham that started the brighter in the opening fifteen minutes but Epsom came strong for the rest of half and should have been a couple of goals up by half-time but a string of fine saves by Cobham keeper Ben Sims prevented the E's from being ahead. Epsom managed to take the lead on 48 minutes when the ball was knocked long, Ruben Lavrado holding off a Cobham defender to play the ball into Zach Powell, the midfielder brought the ball into the box before curling it into the far top corner of the net from 15 yards out. Epsom centre back Dan Cunningham saw his header on 52 minutes from a Mark Frimpong corner only just fly over the bar. Epsom & Ewell extended the lead on 73 minutes, another long clearance by Dan Cunningham saw Ruben Lavrado pick the ball up just inside the Cobham box managing flick the ball past the injured Cobham keeper Ben Sims and then flick it past another defender before firing home from 6 yards out. Cobham were forced to replace Sims after the goal and the delay in restarting saw Epsom switch totally off, from the kick-off the ball was fired long straight down the middle of the pitch for Cobham substitute Jermaine Dakin to score with his first touch after coming on by guiding the ball past Alex Sale. Epsom should of ensured all three points on 81 minutes, the ball finding Chris Monk 8 yards out but he rushed his effort to slice his effort wide of the net.

Epsom & Ewell suffer injury time defeat

Epsom & Ewell mourned Dave Wilson with a one minute's silence at Merstham but the team managed to put in a performance that Dave would have been proud of despite going down 2-1. Epsom & Ewell managed to open the scoring on 22 minutes when the ball found its way into Philip N'gbale's feet, managing to wriggle past three challenges his shot from the edge of the box found the far corner of the net. Epsom & Ewell should have been further ahead, Ian Chatfield was forced into making an acrobatic save to his left from another Phillip N'gbale shot on 42 minutes, Phillip N'gbale on 48 minutes got in behind the Merstham defence before pulling the ball back trying to find Dale Marvell but the ball fell slightly behind the Epsom midfielder. Andy Amfo-Brobbey's free-kick on 57 minutes saw Merstham appealing for offside against Phillip N'gbale but failed to notice the late run of Dale Marvell to ghost in to fire a shot in from 6 yards out, Ian Chatfield making a reaction save to his right to push the ball wide of the post. Merstham scored the equaliser on 72 minutes when a corner floated into the box was headed from 10 yards out against the underside of the crossbar by Charlie West, the ball crossing the line according to the match officials. Epsom & Ewell wanting the win managed to create further chances through Phillip N'gbale and John Baah but deflections off Merstham defenders prevented the ball from finding the net. Epsom & Ewell suffered the heartbreak of leaving Merstham with nothing in the fourth minute of injury time when a Merstham corner was flicked down, the E's defence tried to clear the ball out of the penalty box but the packed box prevented the clearance, Andy Amfo-Brobbey's attempted clearance hitting the unaware Rob Watkins sending the ball flying into the net. The effort put in by the players was evident at the full time whistle as a number slumped to the pitch through exhaustion.

Reserves gain point at Chipstead despite leading 2-0

Epsom & Ewell's reserves came away from High Road with a 2-2 draw despite leading 2-0. Epsom & Ewell had taken a 2-0 lead with new signing Richard Lyle scoring both E's goals.

Youth win at home to Ashford Town

Epsom & Ewell's Youth made it four points from a possible six points with a confident performance to earn a three nil win at home to Ashford Town (Middx). Epsom & Ewell opened the scoring on 25 minute when Reuben Lavrado managed to bundle the ball home, and the same player was on hand to pick up a loose ball and chip the ball over the advancing keeper from the edge of the box on 42 minutes. Epsom & Ewell made it three nil in the first minute of injury time when Alwyn Dixon managed to pick up a loose ball, his shot rebounding off the post straight to Chris Monk to tap home from 4 yards out.

Epsom & Ewell humbled by Ash

Epsom & Ewell started this match brightly and were competing very well against Ash United in an open first half until the visitors took a 38th minute lead, Rob Lovesey's clearance falling on to the edge of the area, no Epsom player reacting allowing the Ash player to gather the loose ball and hit a shot into the corner of the net. The second half was all one way traffic with Epsom's keeper and back three kept busy as the Epsom midfield went missing preventing John Baah upfront from receiving any service, Ash scoring their second on 50 minutes, the ball being chipped into the edge of the box, Andy Amfo-Brobbey on the wrong side of the Ash player allowing the visiting player to score with a half volley past Neil Harrowing. Ash were going through the motions by the time that the third goal occurred on 74 minutes as the Epsom players had given up on challenging for all balls, the ball being floated deep into the Epsom box, Richard Ingham clearing on the volley only for the ball to be volley back into the far corner of the net from 25 yards out - another goal conceded where 90 out of 100 times the ball would of gone wide. Epsom missed the suspended Phillip N'gbale as the home side failed to make the keeper make a save during the match.

Epsom & Ewell embarrassed at CB Hounslow

Epsom & Ewell's first team after one of the best performances so far this season against Leatherhead last week put in their worst performance of the season where too many of the players came out with the mentality and attitude that all we had to turn up to win the league cup tie against CB Hounslow United from Division 1, and if the team puts in many more of the type of performance that was being witnessed today then the club is likely to be in Division 1 along with today's hosts next season. The only notable event in the first half was Mark Solomon hitting a post with a shot in the final minute of the half. Epsom & Ewell opened the scoring on 46 minutes when Mark Solomon's cross found Dale Marvell with a downward header from 8 yards out. Epsom & Ewell kept trying to find a way to try to score a second and looked quite content and secure until the 70th minute, Mark Solomon trying to shield the ball out but allowed a CB Hounslow player to manage to keep the ball in and run down the right wing, the ball crossed in for a home player unmarked at the back post 12 yards out to fire past Neil Harrowing. CB Hounslow scored the winner on 76 minutes, a long ball evading the Epsom defence for a CB Hounslow player to run through and score past Harrowing from 15 yards out, we knew it was definitely not our day in the final 10 minutes when the the hosts clearly gave away corner kicks twice only for the referee and assistant to award goal kicks despite both teams lining up for the corner.

Reserves defeat at Molesey

Epsom & Ewell's reserves went out of the Suburban League Cup at Molesey. Epsom & Ewell went in front twice before being pegged back by Molesey. Extra-time could not settle the tie and Molesey managed to progress 3-0 on penalties to the next round.

The only positive note to report today is that the Reserves moved off the foot of the Suburban League South Division table despite playing in the league cup as a result of East Grinstead Town losing 4-1 away at Walton Casuals, this is the first time this season that the reserves have not been bottom of the table.

Youth gain draw against Colliers Wood United

Epsom & Ewell's youth team started off the league campaign with a draw at home to Colliers Wood United. The visitors managing to take a 43rd minute lead with a cross from the right wing being converted inside Alex Sale's near post. Epsom & Ewell equalised on 52 minutes when Yousef Conteh picked up a loose ball to chip the ball over the Colliers Wood keeper from 12 yards out. Zach Powell's free-kick on 62 minutes from 30 yards out rattled the crossbar and Yousef Conteh could of snatched the points in injury time when he held off three defenders inside the visitors box before unleashing a shot from 15 yards out that only just cleared the crossbar.

Reserves defeated at home to Merstham

Epsom & Ewell's Reserves were defeated 4-2 at home to Merstham this evening. The visitors took a fortunate second minute lead when a shot from the edge of the box took a deflection off an Epsom boot giving the ball a lot of spin before taking a leg break off a divot in the Epsom box to send it past Albert Ademi who had lined himself up for a comfortable save. Epsom & Ewell were handed a fortunate goal on 18 minutes, John Baah firing a shot at goal that was well blocked by the visitors keeper, Charlie Pritchard was first to the loose ball to help it towards goal from 10 yards out, the covering Merstham defender seemed to only have to clear off the line but managed to miss the ball with two air shots to allow the ball to trickle over the line. Merstham re-took the lead on 30 minutes with a free-kick from 25 yards that was curled over the wall just inside the post.  Epsom & Ewell equalised again on 47 minutes when a through ball saw John Baah's shot blocked, the Epsom striker from the edge of the box managing to hook the ball home. Merstham re-took the lead on 56 minutes when the ball was played into the box from the left wing, the shot by a visiting player from 10 yards being blocked by Albert Ademi at his near post, the ball flying loose finding a Merstham player with a sliding dive at the back post to knock the ball into the net with the Epsom defence failing to react to the loose ball. Merstham secured the match on 68 minutes, the ball being played down the right wing before being crossed through the Epsom box for a Merstham player to get in front of his marker to score low past Ademi from 6 yards out.

Epsom & Ewell knocked out by FA Cup by Tanners

Epsom & Ewell were knocked out of the FA Cup by Leatherhead at Merland Rise in the Preliminary Round today. Leatherhead took a 21st minute lead when a corner that seemed to have been well rehearsed on the training field saw the corner dummied allowing the ball to roll to Steve Sargeant to hit a first time shot from the edge of the area that found the back corner of the net. Epsom & Ewell competed very well against the Tanners from a level above and could have been level on 37 minutes when Paul Borg was forced to push a Dale Marvell cross on to the bar and again on 48 minutes when Phillip N'gbale did well to get past Tanners keeper Borg, his shot being diverted around the post by Paul Sears hip. Leatherhead secured their passage through to the next round with a 66th minute goal when the corner was floated into the edge of the six yard box, the ball pinging around the box for a couple of seconds before Gavin Bolger managed to get a diving header in to send the ball into the net. Epsom & Ewell kept battling to the end of the match and were still creating chances but the Tanners defence were able to prevent Epsom from getting on the scoresheet. Epsom keeper Neil Harrowing was forced into making a one handed acrobatic save in the final 10 minutes to keep Leatherhead from scoring a third.

The match scheduled for Tuesday has been postponed as North Greenford United gained a draw at Godalming Town today, the match will now be played Tuesday 26th September (kick-off 7:30pm).
