Saturday 28th October 2006 Following today's match at home to Wembley, Epsom & Ewell have announced that Lyndon Buckwell has been appointed as first team manager and joins from Corinthian Casuals where he has been their 1st team assistant manager alongside Brian Adamson this season. Peter Augustine following the announcement has decided to leave the club, we thank Peter for his efforts over the past 16 months whilst he has been at the club and especially for taking control of the first team as caretaker manager after the resignation of Paul Pritchard in late August and we wish him all the best in the future. Lyndon will announce his backroom staff line-up in due course
Three points gone in sixty seconds Epsom & Ewell looked destined to gain back to back home wins as they entered injury time leading but managed to concede two goals to see all three points snatched by a very unimpressive and uninspired Wembley side. Epsom & Ewell pushed Wembley back from the start of the match and it only took three minutes for the E's to create the first chance of the match when Adam Pero picked up a Darren Brown pass, the Epsom striker managing to put the ball into the side netting from 8 yards out. Epsom took a deserved lead on 7 minutes, Darren Brown's long throw seeing the Wembley defence in chaos, Adam Pero trying to get his head on the bal failed to get a touch, the ball bouncing kindly for Dale Marvell to volley home from the edge of the area through a crowd of players. Epsom & Ewell were nearly two up on 23 minutes, another Darren Brown header finding Adam Pero 12 yards out that forced Wembley keeper Lee Pearce to scramble back to tip the ball on to the top of his crossbar. Wembley were looking more threatening within the last fifteen minutes of the first half and they managed their first venture into the Epsom box on 38 minutes, Wembley boss Ian Bates slipping the ball through to Steve Augustine, the brother of Epsom caretaker manager Peter Augustine his shot from 15 yards out trying to find the far corner was excellently blocked by Epsom keeper Pierre Bourdet. Wembley managed to get an equaliser on 40 minutes in fortunate circumstances, Julian Phillips adjudged to have handled the ball although everybody else in the ground saw it clearly come off his shoulder, the free-kick being fired into the back post for the Wembley's Wayne McCrormack to steer it home past Pierre Bourdet. Epsom & Ewell were asserting the pressure on the visitors again from the start of the second half, Adam Pero with another header this time off a Dale Marvell corner which Lee Pearce was able to gather more comfortably than the one in the first half. Adam Pero re-established the Epsom lead on 69 minutes, Darren Brown's long throw finding Pero 10 yards out with a glancing header that left Wembley keeper Lee Pearce stranded. Epsom were looking comfortable for all three points until the 90th minute, a long throw into the box seeing the Epsom defence manage to half clear the ball only for Jumo Mitchell on the edge of the box to volley the ball back into the net. Dale Marvell was disposed of the ball from the restart, the ball being pinged to the left wing where a lunging tackle saw the referee award a free-kick. The free-kick to the far post seeing Pierre Bourdet call for the ball but fail to get anywhere near it allowing Marc Talbot to head home from 4 yards out. Wednesday 25th October 2006 Epsom & Ewell's youth side never got out of the blocks from the start and found themselves 2-0 down after just 5 minutes when Niall McCourt scored a brace both times from the edge of the area, Yousef Conteh was hacked down from behind in the 38th minute that saw Epsom's loud penalty appeals turned down and the Epsom side found themselves three down in the fifth minute of first half injury time when the ball was crossed to the back post for the finish to be applied by Sam Brennan. Epsom & Ewell came out for the second half and could have been four down on 47 minutes except for an excellent save by Alex Sale, Ruben Lavrado reduced the arrears on 53 minutes when his shot from 15 yards out took a deflection to send the ball past Darren Goldsack, Mark Frimpong was taken out in the Ramsgate penalty area on 60 minutes with a challenge that was only half intensity of the one that was not given on Yousef in the first half. Dan Cunningham sent the keeper the wrong way and the comeback was complete in the 64th minute, Darren Goldsack's goalkick only managing to find Zach Powell his boot sending the ball back towards the Ramsgate area seeing Ruben Lavrado run clear of the Ramsgate defence, pick up the ball and fire home from 15 yards out. Both sides could have added to the tally in the remainder of the second half and extra time but the lottery of penalties saw Ramsgate progress after the seventh penalty each side took. Saturday 21st October 2006 Epsom & Ewell after last week's win at home to Guildford City came away from Berkeley Fields without a point but based on chances deserved at least a point in the 2-1 defeat against North Greenford United. The only change made by Epsom & Ewell was Mark Styles coming in for the injured Louis Smith, and the hosts took early control of the match resulting in a string of corners, the third one seeing the ball knocked down for Jon Hill to slice his effort from 8 yards out into the top corner of the net. Adam Pero on 8 minutes was played in, his effort from 8 yards out coming off the face of the post, if the ball had gone it it still would not have counted as the assistant referee raised his flag for offside late. Epsom managed to find an equaliser on 13 minutes which opened the game up, Julian Phillips shot from 25 yards out trying to find the top corner saw Lee Gritt get his leg in the way which brought the ball down into the path of Adam Pero who was in the right place to bury his shot from 10 yards out. Epsom started to play the ball around comfortably with the confidence of the equaliser, a long ball down the left wing on 15 minutes finding Daniel Ike to lay the ball back into Dale Marvell, his shot going straight into North Greenford keeper Kyle Bunnins gloves. Dale Marvell picked up a ball on 17 minutes, his cross trying to find Adam Pero saw the Epsom striker unable to get his head to the ball, the ball running through to Jamie Watson to hit a looping volley from 15 yards out that forced Bunnins to acrobatically save. North Greenford scored what turned out to be the winner on 21 minutes, a long throw seeing Epsom keeper Pierre Bourdet come out to punch but failed to get a clean contact, Michael Peacock volleying the ball into the empty net from 10 yards out. The final quarter an hour of the first half was flat after a nasty looking freak accident that took place on the half hour mark, with possible protection for keeper's being called for in the past week following the Petr Cech incident, Epsom keeper Pierre Bourdet and a North Greenford player both went for a whipped in cross, Bourdet getting full control of the ball with both hands but the North Greenford player was unable to pull out of his attempt to head the ball as his head collided with Bourdet seeing both players land awkwardly. After an eight minute delay for treatment to both players, the hosts were forced to substitute their player so that a 5" gash to his forehead could be stitched and the Epsom keeper was able to carry on for a couple more minutes before being replaced by Neil Harrowing suffering from mild concussion. The second half saw a very even contest, but there were worries after 50 minutes that another Epsom keeper would have to go off as Neil Harrowing came and collected a cross before being bulldozed with a late challenge into his midrift that sent him flying but the Epsom keeper was alright to continue. Epsom & Ewell substitute Darren Brown on 65 minutes picked up a Julian Phillips layoff, his fierce shot from 12 yards out forcing Kyle Bunnins to make a one handed flying save to deflect the ball over his own bar. North Greenford's only effort on the Epsom goal in the second half from a free kick went flying over the crossbar on 68 minutes. Epsom & Ewell were prevented from an equaliser on 83 minutes, Jamie Watson's whipped in cross seeing Epsom striker Adam Pero and Greenford keeper Kyle Bunnins rise together for the ball, the home player managing to punch the ball against the back of Pero's head, the ball spinning towards the North Greenford goal but a last ditch slide by Scott Raper managed to divert the ball wide of the post to the relief of the home supporters. Epsom & Ewell in the dying moments of the match saw Julian Phillips get the ball tight with the goal line in the penalty area, his pass across the face of the six yard box seeing Jamie Watson coming in on the back post, the Epsom midfielder off balance getting minimal contact on the ball before Dean Pleasant also trying to get his foot to the ball managed to miss the ball but play Watson instead, the referee turning down the penalty appeals. ... and at Horley The reserves on the back of two heavy defeats suffered another defeat but by a narrow 1-0 scoreline. Enver Hasa for Epsom & Ewell getting sent off for the second time inside three matches for kicking an opponent. Friday 20th October 2006
Potential ties involving Southern Youth League East Division teams: 25. Harrow Borough or Staines Town v Woking or Worthing Wednesday 18th October 2006 Epsom & Ewell's youth completed a double over Ashford Town (Middx) with their least impressive performance of the season in tonight's 3-1 win away at Shorts Lane. Epsom took a second minute lead when a ball played straight through the defence by Zach Powell saw Yousef Conteh latch on to the ball, his cross played across the face of the six yard box seeing the ball bundled home off a combination of Ruben Lavrado boot and the boot of an Ashford defender. Epsom extended the lead on 27 minutes, Zach Powell's ball over the top trying to send Ruben Lavrado away saw Ashford keeper Richardson come flying out of his box to try to clear only for the Ashford keeper to have a fresh air shot, Ruben Lavrado picking up the loose ball and rolling it home into the empty net from the edge of the area. Epsom were ragged at the back and began to look tired, this being their third match inside six days and the visitors allowed Ashford plenty of chances in the opening twenty minutes of the second half but Epsom re-took the initiative for the final twenty minutes with the introduction of Alwyn Dixon, Yousef Conteh converted an Ivan Dos Santos cross on 71 minutes but the flag was raised for offside. A deserved third did arrive on 74 minutes, Dan Cunningham's free-kick just inside the Ashford half being curled into the back post, Ivan Dos Santos' header from 10 yards out crashing off the bar straight to Ruben Lavrado to drill the ball back past the keeper from 9 yards out. Epsom & Ewell once again conceded an injury time consolation goal, the corner finding the Ashford player standing 6 yards off the near post with a header, the win not enough to remain top of the table as Godalming Town beat Cobham 4-0 to go top on goal difference. Enver Hasa scored from a header on 44 minutes to reduce the arrears but Lewis Fullerton off a Burgess Hill free-kick managed to kick the ball into his own net on the stroke of half-time to make it 4-1. Epsom & Ewell reduced the arrears on 47 minutes when Richard Lyle scored, Burgess Hill managing to make it five with an overhead bicycle kick on 67 minutes, six on 75 minutes when a cross saw an angled shot from 8 yards out that Tim Farrington managed to parry with the loose ball being tapped home, seven on 77 minutes with a free-kick that was converted from 8 yards out by unmarked striker, eight on 83 minutes with a free-kick that was floated into the box finding a cushioned downward header and nine on 85 minutes with a shot from the edge of the area finding the inside of the far post. Fixture & Cup Draw alterations The Combined Counties League have re-arranged our home league match against Cove again. The match will now take place at Merland Rise on Tuesday 28th November (kick-off 7:30pm) Also the Combined Counties League have readjusted the draw for the Grant-McLellan Youth Cup - the original five ties in the first round stay the same but due to an oversight, Bedfont Green and Cove were both omitted from the draw in error, Bedfont Green have therefore been paired against Guildford City who were the first team to receive a bye and Cove have been paired against ourselves as we were the second team to receive a bye - Colliers Wood United remain the only team to receive a bye to the Quarter Finals. Saturday 14th October 2006 Epsom & Ewell managed to gain their first win of the season with a 2-0 win at home to Guildford City and in the process manage to keep their first clean sheet since New Year's Day. Caretaker manager Peter Augustine since the defeat at Chertsey Town bringing in a number of new players to the squad, a number of them making their debuts today. French keeper Pierre Bourdet starting instead of Neil Harrowing between the sticks, a trio of Egham players that have had reserve team run outs in the past fortnight Jamie Watson and Julian Phillips starting in midfield and Adam Pero starting upfront in place of the suspended and injured Phillip N'gbale. Epsom & Ewell started the brighter of the sides and an early chance fell to Julian Phillips with a downward header that was an easy gather for Guildford keeper Ajuna Adlam after 5 minutes. Although Epsom & Ewell were penning the Guildford side back into their own half, the choice of footwear of the home players were causing them to slip over just as they were about to receive the ball in the danger area preventing any meaningful chances to be created. Jamie Watson, Dale Marvell and Julian Phillips in the final ten minutes of the first half saw half chances wide of the Guildford goal. Epsom could have been easily two goals ahead within the first three minutes of the second half, Jamie Watson connecting with a volley from 12 yards out in the first minute of the half forcing Guildford keeper Ajuna Adlam to make a reaction save above his own head. Adam Pero received a Ricky Rockfeller in the second piece of action, his shot being blocked by Creag Wilson to turn the ball away for a corner. Epsom managed to open the scoring on 55 minutes, Adam Pero's knock down seeing Jamie Watson gather the loose ball then evade the tackle of Jim Clarke before lifting the ball over Guildford keeper Ajuna Adlam who was forced to commit himself to come out to narrow the angle. Dale Marvell's corner on 70 minutes found the head of Tim Hurren, his effort going just over the crossbar. Epsom were asleep to a free-kick on 78 minutes allowing Harry Baker to ghost in with a header that cannoned off the crossbar. Epsom keeper Pierre Bourdet was called into action on 88 minutes when Guildford managed to whip a cross in that saw Aneel Azeem hit a volley from 12 yards out that was blocked by the E's keeper. Epsom secured all three points in the first minute of injury time, Jamie Watson's pass dissecting the Guildford defence seeing Adam Pero burst through to pick up the loose ball, Pero looking around with the Guildford defence all holding there arms aloft claiming offside but the assistant referee's flag stayed down, Pero one on one with the keeper chipped the ball over Ajuna Adlam from 20 yards out seeing the Epsom players celebrate along with caretaker manager Peter Augustine who was unable to prevent showing his delight of claiming the first win of the season. Reserves get hammered for second time this season Epsom & Ewell suffered their second heavy defeat of the season when they went down 9-0 away at AFC Wimbledon this afternoon. The reserves will have to pick themselves up for their next match at home to Burgess Hill Town on Monday night. Thursday 12th October 2006 Epsom & Ewell's youth team progressed to a third qualifying round tie away at Ramsgate in a fortnight with a 2-1 win away at Oakwood in this evening's second qualifying round tie. Epsom & Ewell with most of the pressure on the Oakwood half should have been ahead by the time the half time break occurred as Ruben Lavrado was presented with a number of opportunities but he kept finding himself offside but the one time when he managed to stay onside his shot from a tight angle missed the far post by inches. The second half saw Oakwood given opportunities to come back into the game as the match opened up, but the E's took the lead on 70 minutes when Alfred Akiotou managed to drag a number of Oakwood players towards him, his cross into the far post finding the unmarked Yousef Conteh with a downward header from 6 yards out. Epsom had a second goal on 78 minutes ruled out for offside against Ruben Lavrado, but it was Lavrado who went on a solo run from 20 yard out on 82 minutes seeing him manage to stroke the ball into the net from 12 yards out past Oakwood keeper Marc Whitmarsh. Epsom conceded a goal in the fourth minute of injury time when Rob Gardiner's effort saw Epsom keeper Alex Sale misjudge the flight of the ball allowing the ball to bounce over him. Tuesday 10th October 2006 The Suburban League have requested that due to a blip with the fixtures computer that has seen ourselves and Burgess Hill due to play each other twice in the same week that our away fixture against Burgess Hill Town on Saturday 21st October should be switched to an away fixture against Horley Town. Monday 09th October 2006 The home league fixture against Cove has been brought forward from Saturday 18th November to Tuesday 14th November (kick-off 19:30) as Banstead have been drawn at home in the FA Vase. Saturday 07th October 2006 With no first team fixture this weekend, attention was on the Reserves fixture away at Haywards Heath Town. Epsom & Ewell made the worst possible start on 3 minutes when the hosts took the lead, the Epsom wall moving just as the free-kick was taken exposing Tim Farrington's near post, the Epsom keeper managing to make a save to his right but a Haywards Heath player was first to the loose ball to tap it home. John Baah was sent clear on 26 minutes, his shot going just wide of the far post. The E's drew level on 35 minutes, Daniel Ike's cross finding the downward header of Hasa Enver that managed to creep into the net. Haywards Heath re-took the lead on 60 minutes, the ball being cross from the right wing towards the back post, the home player collecting the ball but was forced to turn away from the E's goal by Jonathon Sexton, the Haywards Heath player managing to turn and chip the ball from an acute angle 12 yards out over Tim Farrington into the net. Epsom & Ewell were denied penalties being awarded twice for two separate handballs within 10 seconds inside the Haywards Heath area on 62 minutes, but the E's were level again on 65 minutes, Jonathon Sexton's free-kick being chest trapped by Joseph Maye who volleyed the ball home from 10 yards out. Epsom were undone again on 75 minutes, Epsom's defence failing to react to a dangerous ball down the right wing, the ball being crossed low into the box for a Haywards Heath player to score low past Tim Farrington. Daniel Ike saw his shot off a Julian Van Gelder corner on 81 minutes go wide of the post. For the third consecutive Saturday an Epsom player wearing ten saw red, Enver Hasa kicking out on 88 minutes after an off the ball incident. Tim Farrington was forced to make a reaction save to push the ball over the goal in injury time. Wednesday 04th October 2006 The reserves bowed out of the Surrey Premier Cup away at Ashford Town (Middx) with a 2-0 defeat. The reserves played very well against the hosts who have been scoring goals for fun in the Suburban League Premier Division, the hosts scoring either side of half-time to progress to the next round. Youth edge friendly against spirited Colts side Epsom & Ewell's youth side managed to beat the Epsom & Ewell Colts under-16 side at Merland Rise. Youth manager Steve Butt took the opportunity of the friendly to give a number of players a start that have been sitting on the bench recently as well as giving Alfred Akiotou a full ninety minutes to help him get match fit after recovering from his injury and also trial a couple of potential new players. Both sides being top of their respective leagues were keen from the start to show the desire to win the friendly, Chris Monk finding the side netting on 8 minutes for Epsom & Ewell youth after being played in, but it was the Colts that took the lead on 12 minutes, a pass through the channel down the right wing seeing the Colts player collect the ball and fire high past Alex Sale from 12 yards out. The Colts side were causing the Youth defence problems as the first half continued and they could of extended the lead on 19 minutes when a rasping drive from just outside the box required Epsom Youth keeper Alex Sale to make a spectacular one handed save to his right to push the ball wide of the upright. Zach Powell's free-kick on 38 minutes from 30 yards out saw the ball cannon off the face of the crossbar but the Colts managed to scramble the ball clear. Epsom & Ewell Youth managed to go in level at half-time when Ruben Lavrado picked up the ball inside the Colts box on 44 minutes and fired home from 8 yards out. The score line was a fair reflection of the closeness of the half with the Colts being slightly the better side based on performance. The second half started off just as close as the first half but the turning point occurred on the hour mark when Epsom & Ewell Youth took the lead, a throw-in on the right wing saw Ruben Lavrado go pass a Colt player and flight a chip from the edge of the box to the back post for Jerson Dos Santos to score with a flying header. The Colts became very weary for the final 25 minutes of the match as playing two games inside 72 hours caught up with them (there league cup game on Sunday went to extra-time), this gave Epsom & Ewell Youth the opportunity to go up a gear. A shot on 64 minutes saw the ball take a deflection off an Epsom & Ewell Colts defender managing to loop the ball over the Colts keeper but crash off the top of the crossbar. Alex Sale was forced into making another excellent save on 72 minutes, a shot from the edge of the box trying to find the top corner saw Sale get both hands securing around the ball to pluck the ball away from his own net. Alex Sale from this save started an Epsom & Ewell youth move that eventually saw the ball find Peter Alkass just inside the Colts box to execute a good finish to put the Youth 3-1 up. Epsom & Ewell Colts keeper made a fine save in the 88th minute when coming to narrow the angle to push a shot on to the roof of his own net. The Colts were handed a consolation goal in the fourth minute of injury time, Youth keeper Alex Sale slipping over as he took a goal kick, the ball flying straight to a Colts player just outside the Youth box seeing the Colts player bring the back into the box, round Sale and roll the ball into the back of the net. The Colts nearly sneaked an equaliser a minute later, a free-kick being floated into the Youth box seeing an unmarked Colts player get a header in that flew just over the top of the crossbar. Youth Manager Steve Butt said afterwards "We are pleased with the win but a couple of our players mentality was wrong this evening. The Colts are a good little side and made us battle hard for our victory. Both myself and Derek have identified a number of players in their side which we are going to keep a track of as these players are potential Epsom & Ewell Youth players next season. Tuesday 03rd October 2006 The Combined Counties League have released the first round draw for the Grant-McLellan Youth Cup. Epsom & Ewell have received a bye straight into the Quarter-Finals. All ties (except the final) will be played on a home and away basis First Round (played over two legs by 12th December 2006) Byes: Guildford City, Epsom & Ewell, Colliers Wood United Monday 02nd October 2006 Epsom & Ewell's Youth team have arranged a friendly for this Wednesday evening at Merland Rise against the Colts Under 16 side. The youth team did not originally have a scheduled league fixture this week and despite our best efforts we were unable to bring forward a league fixture or arrange a friendly with another Southern Youth league side as there is a full league programme this week in the Southern Youth League. Youth manager Steve Butt said "I am delighted that we have managed to arrange a fixture for this week ahead of our match in the FA Youth Cup next week. For some of the Colts side this will probably be the first time that they would have played under floodlights and this friendly will give them an opportunity to experience playing against a Southern Youth League side" The FA Youth Cup 2nd Qualifying Round match away at Oakwood has been arranged for next Thursday (12th October) - kick-off 7:45pm. Sunday 01st October 2006 Epsom & Ewell Reserves fixture scheduled for this Tuesday evening has been moved back by 24 hours to Wednesday evening as Ashford Town are now involved in an FA Cup replay. |
