Reserves pick up first point at Raynes Park Vale

Epsom & Ewell's picked up their first point of the season away at Raynes Park Vale's Grand Drive this evening. Raynes Park wasted a number of chances to go ahead during the first half and they took a deserved lead on 60 minutes, an attempted clearance from the Epsom defence inside their own box deflecting off an incoming Vale player to coolly slot the ball past Tim Farrington. Raynes Park Vale seemed to switch off once they had scored the goal and the E's could of been level on 72 minutes when Dean Fullerton set John Oppong-Baah clear to beat the offside trap, his shot from 20 yards out beat the keeper but hit the top of the crossbar. The E's equaliser did occur on 84 minutes, Dean Fullerton flighting the ball over the Raynes Park defence, the home keeper coming flying out of his area to get to the ball ahead of Charlie Pritchard but he misjudged the timing of his attempted volley clearance with an air shot allowing Pritchard to roll the ball into the empty net from the edge of the area.

Youth fixture switch

Due to Colliers Wood United having a Combined Counties Premier Reserve match at home next Wednesday, Epsom & Ewell and the Southern Youth League have agreed to next week's fixture being switched to Merland Rise with the youth visiting Colliers Wood on 17th January (three days before the 1st XI visit in the Combined Counties Premier Division)

Epsom & Ewell held at Chessington & Hook

Epsom & Ewell were held to a 1-1 draw at Chessington & Hook in this morning's match in the Combined Counties Premier Division. Caretaker manager Peter Augustine made a couple of changes from the side that lost heavily on Saturday at home to Egham Town, and it was the E's that took the lead on 6 minutes when Andy Amfo-Brobbey closed down the back pass to the Chessington keeper, the home keeper finding Phillip N'gbale allowing him to take the ball around the keeper and slide it home from 8 yards out. Chessington & Hook managed to score an equaliser on 32 minutes when the free-kick into the Epsom box saw Paul West not marked properly allowing him to beat Neil Harrowing. Chessington & Hook came close on two occasions in the opening five minutes of the second half but Epsom enjoyed the majority of the better chances in the second half with Dale Marvell and Phillip N'gbale both forcing two saves out of the home keeper and Andy Amfo-Brobbey also had one effort blocked. Chessington were reduced to ten men midway through the second half for an elbow on Tim Hurren, despite the E's numerous attacks we were unable to find the net and a 1-1 draw was a fair result.

Epsom & Ewell hit for six again

Epsom & Ewell were hit for six for the second time inside eleven days. Egham opened the scoring on 5 minutes, the Epsom defence allowing Steve Bennett to be left unmarked to score low past Neil Harrowing from 6 yards out. Egham made it two on 26 minutes, Steve Bennett's free-kick sailing into the top corner of the net. Egham made it three with a fluke goal a minute after the break when Mark Solomon's clearance cannoned off Baker, the ball looping into the far corner of the net and it was four after 63 minutes when Pero's shot from the edge of the box seemed to go straight through the Epsom defence and keeper Neil Harrowing. Egham made it five on 70 minutes when Rob Lovesey mistimed his attempted header just inside the Epsom half allowing Postins a free run to run the ball into the box round Neil Harrowing and slot the ball home. Phillip N'gbale scored a consolation goal when Mark Solomon's cross found the head of N'gbale to score his fifth goal of the season. Egham still managed to find a sixth goal, Danny Barnes clearance ricoheting off an player straight to Steve Bennett six yards out to score his hat-trick past Neil Harrowing.

Youth draw blank against Croydon Athletic

Epsom & Ewell's Youth drew a blank in their latest and probably their last pre-season friendly against Croydon Athletic played at Crescent Rovers F.C. tonight. Epsom were missing a number of players giving manager Steve Butt the opportunity to trial different players in positions ahead of the season in the Southern Youth League. Epsom keeper made an excellent save in the first half to keep a shot from the visitors out of the top corner and Epsom were guilty of missing two gilt edge chances in the second half in a match played in torrential rain that failed to get going.

Four goals apiece, three for Marvell, two sending-offs and a spectacular injury time equaliser for Vale

Epsom & Ewell and Raynes Park Vale fought out an eight goal thriller at Merland Rise this evening but Epsom will be most gutted for missing out on all three points for the second match inside three days - this time it was an eighth of an inch difference that saw the E's only pick up a point. Epsom & Ewell found themselves a goal down on 11 minutes when Raynes Park Vale with their first corner found James Earp standing on the back post, his shot from 8 yards out taking a deflection off an Epsom defender going in off the underside of the crossbar. Epsom & Ewell found themselves two down on 41 minutes against the run of play despite having the majority of the ball and action in the Raynes Park Vale half for most of the half, the ball was played forward to James Earp, he managed to twist and turn inside the Epsom box crossing for an unmarked Aaron Agyeman to score off the underside of the crossbar from the edge of the six yard box. Epsom & Ewell managed to get a goal back on 44 minutes when Charlie Pritchard's pass found Dale Marvell who managed to beat one defender and shoot low into the net past Raynes Park keeper Chris Eldergill from 10 yards out. Another Charlie Pritchard pass in the second minute of injury time picked out Dale Marvell in acres of space allowing himself time to bring the ball down and pass the ball into the far corner of the net from the edge of the box.

Epsom & Ewell lost the momentum at the start of the second half allowing Raynes Park to play once again and it was Vale that re-took the lead on 61 minutes, the ball being played straight down the middle of the Epsom & Ewell defence allowing Aaron Agyeman to be first to the ball to roll it home under the advancing Albert Ademi. Epsom & Ewell squared the match again on 68 minutes, Jamie Buckley's free-kick finding Russell Newbury's diving header from 7 yards out. Epsom were awarded a penalty on 80 minutes when Phillip N'gbale was taken from behind in the Raynes Park Vale box, Dale Marvell sending Eldergill the wrong way from the spot for his hat-trick. Phillip N'gbale picking up the ball to take it back to the centre circle being grabbed by the throat by Matt Grout who also managed to also dispatch a couple of kicks - the assistant referee bringing this to the referee's attention which saw the Raynes Park Vale player shown a straight red. Phillip N'gbale who had been booked in the first half joined him in the dressing rooms for a second yellow card on 89 minutes for a cynical challenge from behind. Raynes Park equalised in the second minute of injury time when a corner was punched clear by Albert Ademi straight to Darren Dobinson to hit a shot from the edge of the box that managed to rise to clear all the players in the box but fall enough to find the underside of the crossbar.

Reserves lose at home to Tooting & Mitcham United

Epsom & Ewell Reserves on the back of the thumping defeat away to Tonbridge on Saturday regrouped by making numerous changes tonight. Tooting & Mitcham opened the scoring on 7 minutes when a shot from just inside the box saw Epsom keeper Tim Farrington unable to hold on to the ball which came loose straight to a Tooting attacker to slot home from 5 yards out. Tooting & Mitcham extended the lead on 64 minutes when a rifled in shot from close range inside the Epsom box hit an Epsom defender's arm, the referee pointing to the spot despite no appeals from the Tooting players which was converted. Tooting scored a third two minutes later when the ball sat up nicely for the Tooting & Mitcham to mishit an attempted volley from 20 yards out that managed to find the inside of the far post.

Epsom & Ewell gain a point but denied all three points by officials

Epsom & Ewell battled back well from 2-0 down to get a 2-2 draw but were denied all three points by a refereeing blunder. Epsom & Ewell on the back of the heavy defeat at Chipstead on Tuesday night made a number of changes as well as welcoming Paul Pritchard back to the dugout. Epsom & Ewell started slowly and Bedfont managed to gain the lead on 15 minutes when a corner to the edge of the six yard box saw Mark Adams get his head to the ball to give the home side the lead. Epsom & Ewell came back into the match as the half drew to a lose with Mark Solomon and Phillip N'gbale forcing saves out of Patrick Doyle. Epsom & Ewell were dominating the second half up until Bedfont managed to win a free-kick on 66 minutes which was floated to the back post finding Daniel Hasick to head the ball back across the six yard box for Ezra Edwards to head the ball home from 6 yards out.

Epsom & Ewell managed to reduce the arrears on 70 minutes when a break from inside their own half started by Rob Lovesey saw the ball played into Phillip N'gbale (pictured above) by Sam Bulbeck just inside the Bedfont half, the Epsom striker running 40 yards with the ball evaded six challenges and managed to round Bedfont keeper Patrick Doyle and slide the ball into net from 10 yards out. Epsom & Ewell managed to score an equaliser on 75 minutes when  Mark Solomon's cross saw Phillip N'gbale rise above the replacement Bedfont keeper to head the ball home. Bedfont should of regained the lead on 81 minutes when Mark Solomon was caught out of position, Erza Edwards running through and rounding Albert Ademi but his shot found the side netting. Epsom & Ewell saw a legal goal chalked off on 85 minutes, Charlie Pritchard's pass seeing a Bedfont defender trying to shield the ball back to keeper but Phillip N'gbale managed to get a foot on the ball to knock it past the keeper's dive, N'gbale's trailing foot clipping the Bedfont keeper as he went past to stroke the ball home from an acute angle 10 yards out from goal, but the assistant referee and referee wrongly judged that the keeper had both hands on the ball.

Reserves get a Tonbridge turning over

Epsom & Ewell's reserves got turned over at Tonbridge 10-1 today on the opening day of the Suburban League season - the E's heaviest defeat in our Suburban League history. Tonbridge were three up before half-time, Darren Brown reduced the arrears on 48 minutes but Tonbridge then hit seven goals inside the final 40 minutes of the match.

Youth grind out win against Chipstead

Epsom & Ewell's youth team managed to grind out a 1-0 win at Chipstead in their latest pre-season friendly. Epsom & Ewell scored the only goal of the match on 12 minutes when Zak Powell's free-kick from 30 yards out found the top corner of the net. The Epsom & Ewell defence lived dangerously on a number of occasions but they managed to keep the ball out and keep a clean sheet. Chipstead's best opportunity occurred a minute from time from a one on one but a double save from the E's keeper managed to ensure that Chipstead failed to score.

Tonight's result comes on the back of a 3-2 win away at AFC Wimbledon on Tuesday night. Youth manager Steve Butt said after the match tonight "[AFC] Wimbledon were a good test for our side as they play teams such as Woking and Wycombe's youth academy sides in the Football Conference Youth League. Two objectives were set for the match tonight which were to win and to keep a clean sheet which the team managed to achieve although I do admit we did ride our luck at times - you have to learn how to grind out 1-0 wins at our level which the new players would have learnt with this match tonight"

Epsom & Ewell Youth have a provisional pre-season friendly against Chertsey Town sometime next week subject to pitch availability at Merland Rise

Epsom & Ewell suffer another green & white hoops nightmare

Epsom & Ewell just over four months on from the Easter Monday debacle that occurred at Meadowbank at the hands of Dorking were up against another side that wear green & white hoops of Chipstead, and unfortunately the same nightmare occurred tonight. Epsom & Ewell found themselves two goals up inside twelve minutes through a brace from Phillip N'gbale (left) - the first one occurring on 10 minutes when a Jamie Buckley corner was knocked down by Peter Solomon and Phillip N'gbale turned and shot home from 10 yards out, the second occurring two minutes later when Phillip N'gbale was on the end of a through ball that Chipstead could not cut out, N'gbale from 25 yards out rolling the ball under Michael Lidbury who had come out to the edge of his box. It was all one way traffic with Chipstead unable to control the attacks of the E's in the first twenty minutes, the Epsom midfield suddenly deciding to change formation by themselves on the twenty minute mark and Epsom & Ewell for the rest of the seventy minutes allowed Chipstead to over run them as the team collapsed as Epsom failed to find another Epsom player with passes. The writing was definitely on the wall by the time that Chipstead did get on the scoresheet on 30 minutes, when a free-kick to the back post saw three Chipstead players on the back post unmarked queuing to tap the ball home. The floodgates then opened as Chipstead within the space of ninety seconds between the 33rd and 35th minutes managed to go from 2-1 down to leading 3-2 with identical goals from sloppy passes on the edge of the centre circle seeing the ball rolled into the Chipstead player to beat Neil Harrowing who both times had come out to narrow the angle.

Chipstead made it 4-2 on 56 minutes with a free-kick that took a huge deflection off Tim Hurren on the end of the wall, the ball thumping in off the inside of the post, it was 5-2 on 60 minutes when a ball down the right wing was played into the box, the shot from 15 yards out taking a deflection that took the ball away from Neil Harrowing onto the inside of the far post and it was made six on 62 minutes when Peter Solomon's header fell straight to the Chipstead player to run in on goal and round Neil Harrowing who had come out to narrow the angle to slot the ball home. Epsom & Ewell did get some shape back and looked more competitive when Simon Hatton came on up front alongside Phillip N'gbale but the match had already gone from the E's. Dale Marvell managed to get a consolation goal in the third minute of injury time when his free-kick from 25 yards took a deflection off Chipstead's McLean to find the bottom corner.

Epsom & Ewell start off with a home loss

Epsom & Ewell began the Combined Counties League season with a narrow 1-0 loss at home to Reading Town. Epsom & Ewell started slowly in a physical encounter, Reading had the greater share of the possession but Epsom had the better first half opportunities through Dale Marvell's shot from just outside the box just after 20 minutes, Jamie Buckley effort that was just over the crossbar on 24 minutes and a Jamie Buckley free-kick that found the side netting on 33 minutes. Reading scored what turned out to be the only on 43 minutes, the ball whipped in across the face of the six yard box, Albert Ademi at full stretch trying to get both gloves firmly on the ball which squirmed loose, none of the Epsom defence quick enough to react to stop Reading's Graham Pickersgill from tapping the loose ball home from 5 yards out.

The second half saw both sides cancelling each other out, Epsom & Ewell coming the closest with a Max Tacey header on 67 minutes from 12 yards out forcing Michael Pratley to back peddle and manage to tip the ball at the last split second on to the roof of his own net. Dale Marvell managed to get on the end of a Mark Solomon cross but his header was over the net. Epsom & Ewell's defence lost concentrating for the first and only time in the second half in the second minute of injury time but the shot by Michael Hancock was parried around the post by Albert Ademi.

Following the match, assistant manger Peter Augustine said "I am disappointed with the result but we were strong defensively and I think over the next couple of weeks I would expect to see a big improvement by the whole team. We still have a long way to go and when we get everything right I feel that we will be a force to be reckoned with in this league"

Paul Pritchard

As supporters may have read in today's programme, the club wishes first team manager Paul Pritchard a quick recovery. Paul went in for a routine minor operation last month which he has fully recovered from but at the same time he managed to pick up a kidney infection during his brief stay in hospital. The doctors last week have ordered Paul to take two complete weeks rest from all work and football commitments, therefore Peter Augustine was in charge of the team today and will also take charge of the first team at Chipstead on Tuesday and Bedfont next Saturday. Paul hopes to be back in the dugout on Tuesday week at home to Raynes Park Vale.

Epsom & Ewell youth score late winner against Trams

Epsom & Ewell's youth team won their latest pre-season friendly at home to Croydon this evening. The E's fell a goal behind on 6 minutes when a Croydon cross found the head on a Croydon player to manage to float the ball into the top corner of the net. Epsom & Ewell levelled on 18 minutes when a through ball saw Chris Monk gather the ball with only the keeper to beat, his first shot being blocked by the Croydon keeper but his persistence allowed him to get a second attempt, this time managing to guide the ball home from 12 yards out. Epsom & Ewell took the lead on 57 minutes when Matt Keddo headed the ball home from 8 yards out. Croydon drew level on 81 minutes when the ball was played long, the Epsom defence being caught the wrong side of the ball, the shot from just inside the box finding the far corner of the net. Epsom & Ewell managed to score the winner on 89 minutes when Zak Powell was on the end of a corner cleared by Croydon to hit the the ball on the half volley over the goalkeeper that dipped just under the crossbar. Manager Steve Butt after the match commented "This was a good run out against Croydon and gave our players a good test. I am very pleased with the way the team played tonight and the way that the team responding after conceding such an early goal."

Epsom & Ewell youth held by Carshalton Athletic youth

Epsom & Ewell's new look youth side gained a draw against last year's Southern Youth League North Division champions Carshalton Athletic. Epsom & Ewell's youth put in an excellent solid performance against strong opposition and took a deserved lead on 11 minutes when the visitors defence failed to clear the ball out of their own box allowing Epsom & Ewell to bundle the ball home. Epsom & Ewell could of extended the lead in the early stages of the second half when a flowing move that started from the back saw the ball end up in the Carshalton box, the shot from just in front of the penalty spot being turned away by the Carshalton keeper. Carshalton scored an equaliser with only a couple of minutes left in the match, the defence failing to close down the Carshalton attackers allowing the ball to be played to the back post finding a Carshalton player to slide the ball home. Youth manager Steve Butt after the match saying "The results in pre-season friendlies is meaningless, it is the performance that is more important and I am very happy with our performance tonight. The side looked solid and like they had been together for a season even though many of them only met each other for the first time just over four weeks ago"

The youth team will play a friendly against AFC Wimbledon on Tuesday 15th August at AFC's training ground - Kingston University Sports Ground, Tolworth (next to Racal Decca). The full youth team fixture list for this season will be posted on this site over the next 24 hours.

Epsom & Ewell first team end pre-season schedule with home defeat

Epsom & Ewell lost 3-0 at home to Ruislip Manor this evening in the last pre-season friendly ahead of the start of the season on Saturday week. Epsom & Ewell were prevented from playing by the Middlesex visitors. Epsom & Ewell could of found themselves a goal down on 11 minutes when a Ruislip Manor corner was headed against Tim Hurren on the line, the visitors deservedly took the lead on 19 minutes when a long ball straight down the middle saw a Ruislip Manor player left unmarked 10 yards out with a downwards header that beat Albert Ademi. Ruislip doubled the lead on the half hour, the ball being pumped down the middle again, the ball being headed back for a volley from 25 yards out into the far top corner. Ruislip could of been three up a minute before the break when the Epsom defence failed to clear the ball inside the box, a snap shot being blocked by a combination of Peter Solomon and Albert Ademi.

Ruislip Manor extended the lead on 70 minutes to 3-0, a free-kick given away cheaply on the left wing saw the Epsom & Ewell side fail to mark up properly, the ball being swung into the box for an unmarked header by a Ruislip Manor player 6 yards out to head the ball past Tim Farrington who had just come on for Albert Ademi. Epsom & Ewell's only chance of the match saw Phillip N'gbale put a pass into Ed Palmer on 76 minutes, the Ruislip Manor keeper narrowing the angle to block the shot from 12 yards out. After the match assistant manager Peter Augustine said "If we had won this match 1-0 we probably would not have got a number of points that have been identified - we now have four training sessions over the next 11 days before playing our first league match to iron out the problems that this match has presented"

There will be no photos available of this match due to technical reasons
